Scottish indie pop band Belle & Sebastian have announced the creation of a new festival called ‘The Glasgow Weekender.’ The event will take place on August 2nd and 3rd at the SWG3 venue, where Belle & Sebastian will perform each night and curate the lineup for both days. The festival is part of the band’s series of ‘Bowlie’ Weekenders, with the first Bowlie staged in 1999 at Pontins, Camber Sands. It was followed by ‘Bowlie 2’ at Camber Sands in 2010 and the ‘Boaty Weekender’ in 2019, which took place on a cruise ship in the Mediterranean Sea.
The festival will include Camera Obscura, CMAT, The Joy Hotel, and Bis, with more acts to be announced. Tickets go on general sale on February 2nd at 10 am. Thus, the band would fill the whole Glasgow venue with “great bands,” “great DJs,” “great food” and “Bowlie” type activities. The band has recently also been announced as part of Kilby’s Block Party this year, with LCD Soundsystem, Vampire Weekend, and The Postal Service set to headline, along with a rare appearance from harpist Joanna Newsom.
Frontman Stuart Murdoch expressed enthusiasm for the festival, saying that Belle & Sebastian have wanted to do a Glasgow event for quite a while, and SWG3 is an excellent venue for them to have the run of the place for the entire weekend. He referred to the event as a “sunny happening on the banks of the Clyde,” and promised live music, DJs, street food, exclusive merchandise, and a top-tier lineup to entertain the guests.
In addition, Murdoch recently announced the details of his forthcoming book, “Nobody’s Empire.” The book, set for release in September 2024, will be part memoir, part fiction, and centred on a character named Stephen, who shares the same chronic fatigue syndrome as Murdoch. Belle & Sebastian also recently made a cameo appearance on The Simpsons
