Dublin-based garage punk band SPRINTS has been steadily gaining attention and raves for their new debut album titled “Letter to Self.” The band has evolved and grown since their formation three years ago, releasing two celebrated EPs and creating an adored reputation for spilling emotion and energy with every live appearance. Now with “Letter to Self,” the quartet takes their music to the next level, showing vulnerability, and adding a necessary dose of catharsis to their garage-punk tunes.
“Writing music that means something, and expressing our identities is the only ethos we have in music,” said Karla, one of the band members of SPRINTS, in a recent interview. The album “Letter to Self” is a raw offering of pain and passion, reflecting the band’s journey to find purpose and perseverance through it all.
To celebrate the new album launch, the band members took time out at the Rough Trade store in New York City for Shoplifting, taking the opportunity to discuss some of the iconic albums that have shaped their sound. The group members were excited to talk about the influences behind their music, as well as their latest album, which can be found through the City Slang label.
Reflecting on some of the iconic music albums that have shaped her life, Karla spoke about the beats of The Velvet Underground and Nico, Pixie’s 30th Anniversary edition of “Come on Pilgrim,” Young Fathers’ “Heavy Heavy,” and Donna Summer’s “Summer: The Original Hits.” Meanwhile, Jack reminisced about Peter Broderick and Ensemble 0’s “Give It to the Sky,” “Afternoon X” by Vanishing Twin, and Bad Brains’ self-titled album. Finally, Sam discussed “In the End It Always Does” by Japanese House, Brian Jonestown Massacre’s “Abandon Ship,” and Kate Bush’s “Hounds of Love.”
SPRINTS is ready to take its place on the indie music scene, with “Letter to Self” showing their evolution as a band and a sound that’s truly their own – raw, vulnerable, and cathartic.
