Organisers of the annual BBC Radio 1 Big Weekend have announced that the event will take place in Luton this year. The festival, which spans the May bank holiday weekend, will be held at Stockwood Park and will last for three days. Although no headliners have been announced yet, last year’s festival in Dundee featured performances from Jamie xx, Jayda G and Rudimental, alongside others.

The festival will feature four stages, which are the Radio 1 Stage, Radio 1 Future Sound Stage, Radio 1 Dance Stage and the BBC Music Introducing Stage. This event will be the first time the festival has been held in Luton and the first time it has lasted for three days. There is also no word on when tickets will go on sale, although 100,000 will be up for grabs.

Luton Council leader Cllr Hazel Simmons MBE has commented on the news, stating that it is “fantastic” that BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend has chosen the town to host this year’s festival. She also added that the festival will “showcase all the wonderful things about Luton” and give the area a “multi-million pound boost”. The festival will provide a number of opportunities for local young people and businesses, as well as offering a chance for the town to show off its various facets.

This announcement comes after the operators of Reading and Leeds festivals, Festival Republic, declared they would add another festival to their roster in Luton. Festival Republic has since confirmed that this festival was to be BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend. It is also worth noting that there will be no major changes neither in the ticketing nor headliners announcements, as everything remains the same
