The latest film from writer and director Andrew Haigh, known for his work on films like “Weekend” and “45 Years,” is a romantic fantasy called “All Of Us Strangers.” Starring Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal, the film is the second adaptation of Taichi Yamada’s novel “Strangers,” which was first released in 1987.
The plot follows a man named Adam (played by Scott) who has a chance encounter with a mysterious neighbor named Harry (Mescal) one night in his almost-empty tower block in London. As their relationship develops, Adam finds himself drawn back to the suburban town where he grew up and the childhood home where his parents died 30 years before.
After coming to terms with his parents’ passing, Adam decides to visit Harry in his flat, only to find Harry’s dead body in the bedroom with the same bottle he was drinking from the night they first met, now empty. However, when Adam is confronted by Harry’s ghost, who is apparently unaware of his own death, he reassures him that it isn’t his body in the bedroom and invites him back to his flat.
As the two of them lie in bed together, Harry’s ghost asks Adam to play a song to fill the silence, and Adam chooses “The Power of Love” by Frankie Goes to Hollywood. As the song plays and they embrace, the camera zooms out to show a starry sky.
“All Of Us Strangers” is set to release in cinemas across the UK on January 26, 2024
