Police are conducting an investigation into the cause of a massive fire that occurred on Saturday in Liverpool’s city centre. A major catastrophe was announced after a disused building on Fox Street became engulfed in flames amid concerns it could collapse. To combat the blaze, 12 fire engines from Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service were dispatched, extinguishing most of the inferno by 5 pm. On Sunday, Merseyside police confirmed that no casualties had been reported, and the cause of the fire is still unknown.
Numerous clips show a large plume of black smoke rising into the sky from the flaming building. A substantial cordon set up around the area led to the evacuation of nearby properties and roads. However, the restriction has been reduced to only include Beresford Street, Yeoman Close, Fox Street, Rose Place, Bute Street, and Beau Street, according to the authorities.
Ch Insp Jon Smith said that police officers had started initial investigations in the area, while the cause of the fire will not be determined until the scene is completely examined by MFRS fire inspectors. Initial leads are being examined, and potential witnesses are being interviewed as they do not want any investigative opportunities to be ignored. Inquiries are a precautionary measure, and no cause has been established at this point. He asked anyone with information to inform the police immediately.
