A building in Liverpool city centre is in danger of collapsing after a large fire broke out on Fox Street. The Merseyside fire and rescue service received the call just before 2.20pm on a Saturday afternoon. When firefighters arrived, they found the four-storey building to be well alight. The service added that shoppers watched as the plumes of smoke spread across the city centre. Smoke from the fire could also be seen rising above Goodison Park during Everton’s FA Cup tie against Luton Town.
Fire crews were evacuating buildings near the blaze as the building was showing signs of collapse. The Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service urged local businesses and residents to close their windows and doors. Meanwhile, people were also advised to avoid the area. Twelve fire trucks and two aerial appliances were required to attend to the large scale fire.
The fire crews wore breathing apparatus and divided the incident into sectors to better manage the situation. Primary branch hoses were used to combat the fire, which had caused a four-storey building to become 100 metres by 50 metres “well alight”. The fire caused the building to show signs of weakness and required residents nearby to perform safety measures. The incident has not been fully resolved and is still ongoing, according to the Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service. As such, people nearby should keep their medicines handy in case of any ill effects and dial NHS 111 for advice
