Dream Wife’s Bella Podpadec launches merch crowdfunder to fund top surgery

Merchandise exclusive to Dream Wife bassist Bella Podpadec has been released as part of a campaign to crowdfund top surgery. The blue t-shirt features a pink unicorn playing the bass with the words “Not my body, I am somebody” from Dream Wife’s 2018 song ‘Somebody’. The band announced the campaign via their Instagram page and the tee is exclusively available on their Bandcamp page for £25. Sales proceeds will go towards Bella’s top surgery and charitable donations to Mermaids UK, an organisation supporting gender diverse children and young people.

Podpadec’s consultation with gender-affirming surgery, also known as gender-confirmation surgery, involves aligning an individual’s body closer to their gender identity. Existing breast tissue is typically surgically removed or added. The limited edition tee features 100% certified organic cotton, oeko approved and vegan.

Podpadec’s relationship with both gender and Dream Wife itself is inseparable. The band has allowed the musician to come out as a non-binary person with Bella emphasising that the lack of resources, especially under section 28, was never available during their teenage years. It’s important that transgender, non-binary and gender nonconforming youngsters receive the support they need especially during the current consultation for schools surrounding gender questioning students.

In honour of the sweet unicorn patch that Podpadec purchased on their first-ever tour, Bell created this original limited edition tee. The harmonising design portrays a transgender unicorn guiding them on their gender journey. Dream Wife’s last album release was in 2023 with ‘Social Lubrication’. In a review, NME described the album as, “finding them picking up where they had left off and then ramping things up several notches.
