Alarming revelations regarding police and social services’ involvement in the case of Alfie Steele, a nine-year-old who died after being subjected to extreme physical abuse by his mother and her partner in Droitwich, Worcestershire, emerged after a BBC investigation. The investigation found out that over 60 calls were made to authorities before the child’s death, indicating several opportunities where the child’s safety could have been prioritized but were missed.

Despite Alfie being under a child protection plan for neglect in 2018 and several reports of Howell’s extensive criminal history, aggression, and drug use in 2019, authorities failed to identify the root cause of the incidents. Several safeguarding strategies were put in place, but professionals faced several hurdles, including two individuals that intentionally misled them.
