Apple Music to increase royalties on Spatial Audio tracks by 10%

Apple Music has announced that it will increase its payment of royalties to artists for tracks that are made in Spatial Audio by 10%, according to a report by Music Business. Apple Music aims to not only promote the use of Spatial Audio but also to compensate artists fairly for their investment and time they put into the mixing of Spatial Audio. The new financial incentive has been set to start from January’s month-end payout and will be calculated based on the proportion of Spatial available to Non-Spatial available plays.

Pro-rata shares for Spatial Available plays will also be calculated using a factor of 1.1 while Non-Spatial Available plays will use a factor of 1. Since the launch of Spatial Audio back in June 2021, more than 90% of listeners using Apple Music gave the new feature a try, and the total number of Spatial Audio plays on the platform has more than tripled over the last two years.

Apple’s Senior Vice President of Services, Eddy Cue, revealed to the media that he believes the future of music is Spatial Audio. Cue described Spatial Audio as virtual surround sound that will make you feel like you’re standing next to the singer or maybe even left of the drummer, right of the guitarist. To maintain the high quality of Spatial Audio tracks, Apple Music has announced a quality control process to ensure that music complies with its Spatial Audio specifications and standard of quality. Apple Music will also have a zero-tolerance policy against manipulative or deceptive content.

Amazon Music has also announced it will support Spatial Audio for all headphones, using Dolby Atmos and Sony’s 360 Reality Audio technology, making immersive sound readily available to all its subscribers. However, it was only in 2019 that Amazon Music managed to make the immersive sound available to only select headphones
