Valdo Calocane has pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility for stabbing three people in Nottingham, killing two students and a school caretaker in June 2021. He had previously denied murder before admitting to manslaughter in November. Calocane also admitted attempting to murder three pedestrians he hit with a van, which he had stolen from one victim. Calocane’s not guilty plea to murder was accepted by prosecutors on the basis of his “serious” mental illness.
The families of the victims were consulted before the plea deal. Nottingham Crown Court was told that Calocane, who went by the name Adam Mendes in court, would have understood the serious nature of his conduct and weapon, despite being diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. As he faces sentencing, the prosecution insisted the case is one of “the utmost seriousness”.
