Johnny Marr, the former guitarist for The Smiths and composer of ‘Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want’, has expressed unhappiness after a video showed the band’s song being played at a rally for Donald Trump. The video has been circulated on X/Twitter and shows the famous Smiths track being played at the South Dakota Republican rally last year. The former president is currently running for the Republican Party nomination to be the US President.
Marr tweeted that he had never imagined in a million years that such a thing would come to pass. Disgusted that the track had been associated with Trump, he wrote: “Consider this shit shut right down right now.” Other musicians have also previously responded to Trump using their music at his rallies. Duncan Jones, the son of icon David Bowie, responded to the former president using his late father’s music to soundtrack his politics.
Other acts who have criticised Trump publicly include Rihanna, Queen, and Adele. In other news, Marr has been announced as one of the artists to play at Glasgow’s Summer Nights At The Bandstand this year.
It was reported that Trump used Bowie’s 1977 classic ‘Heroes’ for his 2024 US presidential bid announcement last year. Reacting to the news at the time, Jones tweeted: “Pretty sure he’s just doing that now to wind me up. We’ve been through this before. He used the same track 6 years ago. I’ve been told there is little we can do about it.” Trump’s use of music has sparked controversy with some musicians claiming their political views differ significantly from those of the ex-president
