HBO’s hit crime drama, True Detective, has returned for its fourth season, with the first episode of Night Country airing on January 14th. The season follows an investigation into the mysterious disappearance of eight men from a research station in Alaska, and has been praised by critics for its suspenseful and smart construction. Directed and co-written by Issa López, the second episode airs on January 21st.
In a five-star review, NME raves about the season, calling it “brilliant winter TV,” and praising López’s direction and the show’s plot twists and reveaks. Night Country has also received high praise from critics across the board.
The cast of Night Country includes Jodie Foster in the role of police chief Liz Danvers, and former world boxing champion Kali Reis as Trooper Evangeline Navarro. The show takes place in Ennis, Alaska, where Danvers has been working for years to solve the case of the eight missing men, with Navarro acting as her partner. Despite the show’s critical success, López has called out fans of the show’s first season for “review-bombing” the new season, or giving it lower scores to keep the first season’s score higher.
