Firefighters rescued five people and their pets from floodwater on the A684 in North Yorkshire. Four vehicles – two cars, a van, and an HGV – were trapped on the stretch of road between Leeming Bar and Northallerton at Morton on Swale on Monday morning.
Initially, emergency services received a report of a car stuck in the floods before 5 a.m. Specialist rescue crews were called in from Richmond and Ripon to help retrieve the stranded drivers.
Further rainfall from Storm Isha has prompted an amber warning for the Yorkshire area and has caused environmental authorities to put out eight flood warnings and 25 alerts across the region.
Local authorities have encouraged residents to prepare for such eventualities as roads in some parts of North Yorkshire remain covered in standstill water. The council has also announced a road closure in the area to prevent further accidents of this nature.
While the rescue operation was successful, it highlights the dangers of floodwater on British roads. Motorists are advised to check the weather forecast and flood alerts before embarking on their journeys, especially during the winter months when heavy rainfall persists
