Mudvayne’s Chad Gray says all new metal bands “sound the same”

Chad Gray, the frontman of Mudvayne, recently shared his thoughts about the present wave of metal bands. He claimed that the new bands all “sound the same” in contrast to the diversity that existed when he started out in the industry. Gray disclosed this information to The Underground Australia during an interview, when asked about the influence of his generation on current music.

Despite acknowledging the emergence of new artists, he noted the lack of uniqueness and individuality among them, while praising his Ozzfest 2001 counterparts like Slipknot, Marilyn Manson, Papa Roach, Disturbed, Drowning Pool, and System of a Down, who all had different sounds and approaches to their art. According to Gray, it was a unique time in music because everyone brought something different to the table.

Meanwhile, Mudvayne, who released their latest album in 2010, is preparing for their forthcoming tour. The nu-metal band, consisting of Gray (vocals), Greg Tribbett (guitar, backing vocals), Matthew McDonough (drums, synthesizer), and Ryan Martinie (bass), reunited in 2021 after a hiatus of 12 years. Since the break, Gray has been the frontman of Hellyeah, which guitarist Greg Tribbett previously played for.

According to Gray, many musicians are currently looking to other bands for influence that are already present in the present era. In contrast, when he was coming up, his inspiration came from music that was 20 years old, rather than music that had only just been released. He emphasized that he wasn’t merely ripping off new bands and reselling their music.
