The UK is bracing itself for another storm set to cause chaos across the country, with winds of up to 80mph expected to cause a risk to life. Forecasters have issued amber weather warnings for wind for large parts of England, Wales, Northern Ireland and some regions of Scotland, while yellow rain warnings are also in place in parts of the country. The Met Office has issued warnings of a risk to life in coastal areas due to large waves and debris being blown inland.
Storm Isha, named as the ninth storm to hit the UK since September, has already seen the Met Office issue yellow rain warnings for central and southern Scotland, which began on Saturday evening and will culminate just before midnight. The storm’s strongest winds are expected on Sunday night and into Monday morning, with three separate amber warnings from the Met Office in place for Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and parts of northern and south-west England.
The storm could result in power cuts, disruption to mobile phone services, and road and bridge closures. Authorities have advised the public to avoid travelling if possible. Energy Networks Association, a UK body representing energy network operators, has warned that there is a risk of damage to homes and infrastructure.
As the UK prepares for the arrival of Storm Isha, it follows Storm Henk which caused significant flooding and disruption earlier in the month. Many areas of the UK remain at risk of flooding, with eight flood warnings and 52 flood alerts issued by the Environment Agency in England as of Saturday evening.
