Thomas Bangalter, former member of Daft Punk, recently shared a story about being approached by a ticket scalper outside one of his own London shows. Bangalter recounted the amusing interaction during an interview with French news channel, Brut. He said he was outside the venue to buy a sandwich when the seller offered him a ticket. Bangalter decided to go along with the joke and purchased the ticket, then went inside and waited for the show to begin.
Bangalter also discussed the pros and cons of the anonymity that came with Daft Punk’s helmeted on-stage presence. While it protected him, he also felt isolated at times. However, after conveying the message about intentions and freedom for 20 years, he felt it was time to step out of the shadows. Bangalter has also been promoting his solo work, which includes a recently released album called ‘Mythologies’ featuring a full orchestra. The album served as the score for a ballet with the same name.
In addition to his solo work, Bangalter has also composed the original soundtrack for Quentin Dupieux’s upcoming film, ‘DaaaaaalĂ!’ Premiering at the Venice International Film Festival in 2023, the film is described as a “real fake biopic.” Although Bangalter is stepping out as a solo artist now, he is still fondly remembered for his contribution to Daft Punk.
While Bangalter’s anonymity allowed him to create and perform music without being the center of attention, he also found that it attracted more attention than it removed. Regardless, his musical legacy with Daft Punk and his upcoming solo work shows that he has no shortage of creativity and talent.
