Scotland has been hit by snow and ice for the past five days, with multiple schools closed as a result. Shetland has been particularly affected, with all schools in the area closed following heavy snowfall. Other affected schools include Ullapool High School, Dingwall Academy, and a number of Highland Council schools in Inverness such as Charleston Academy and Inverness Royal Academy. The wintry conditions have also led to over 60 schools in Aberdeenshire being closed.
Due to the hazardous conditions, many pupils in the North East are facing a later start time. This comes after dozens of drivers in the Highlands were stranded on Thursday evening as snow drifts closed the A9 between Dunbeath and Helmsdale. The road reopened early Friday morning.
The storm has prompted a yellow warning from the Met Office for snow and ice in large parts of Scotland until 3pm on Friday. With many areas hit with sub-zero temperatures across the country, the public has been advised to take extra safety precautions while travelling, to stay informed on the latest travel updates, and to protect themselves and others in this challenging time.
With continued warnings from the Met Office, it is expected that the wintry conditions will persist for a few days still. Local and regional authorities are working to keep residents up-to-date with any further changes or unexpected events that may arise, as well as ensuring relevant services continue operating as smoothly as possible
