Music artist CCL has released a new mixtape titled ‘A Night In The Skull Discotheque’ through Eris Drew and Octo Octa’s T4T LUV NRG imprint. The mixtape, available to purchase as a cassette or streamed online, is influenced by proto-dubstep with various influences such as Lee Scratch Perry, African Head Charge, Kevin Saunderson, Leftfield and Severed Heads. The mixtape is a “sonic sibling” of CCL’s 2018 mix ‘Ode to Queer Steppas,’ and was made using three CDJs, one turntable, and a Boss Digital Delay 200. CCL attempted to deconstruct many classic tracks at the “wrong speed” on top of playing with pitch and layering.
The new mixtape is described as a ‘fantastical place of timeless surreality’ with the sounds of steppers and dubbed-out delights. The mixtape is claimed to feature ‘substrates rocking through syncopated percs, moody synths and macabre glory.’ CCL plans to donate a portion of the profits made from ‘A Night In The Skull Discotheque’ to support Palestinian relief charities Palästina Kampagne and ELSC via a GoFundMe page.
The release is additional to Eris Drew’s own use of “old records to create new styles out of fragments” on her ‘Raving Disco Breaks Vol. 1’ releases. CCL hopes that listeners experience the mixtape’s surreal world and intricate sounds. ‘A Night in the Skull Discoteque’ is a love letter to one of the most impactful formative sounds of the last decades.
The ‘A Night In The Skull Discotheque’ mixtape can listen through SoundCloud and can be purchased online. CCL claims the new mixtape to a fantastical place of timeless surreality a majestic haunted dancehall soundtracked by a giddy rush of steppers and dubbed-out delights. The mixtape is liberating for one’s spiritual wonder
