An inquest has revealed the cause of a woman’s death in Abergele, North Wales on December 23, 2022. Mary Williams was delivering Christmas presents when she appears to have been crushed while attempting to prevent her car from rolling down a country road. The 71-year-old from Betws y Coed left her Seat Leon without using her handbrake before reaching through the driver’s side door to stop it from rolling. The car rolled approximately 98ft (30m) and came to rest on the grass verge, sandwiched between the hedge.
The car remained in place until a witness alerted emergency services after discovering Ms Williams was lying partially inside and outside her vehicle. Despite immediate medical assistance, she was declared dead at the scene. Pathologist Dr Mohammed Aslam concluded the cause of death as postural asphyxia. The coroner recorded a verdict of accidental death. Bernard Grocott, a forensic collision investigator, confirmed the car had no mechanical defects and that the parking brake and auto-hold were in good working condition.
Ms Williams was a former physiotherapist and aided her family in managing a farm and holiday cottages. Her daughter reported no concerns or unusual behavior on the day of the incident when they were together cleaning one of their properties and having coffee. The assistant coroner for North Wales East and Central, Kate Robertson, expressed her condolences to the family and remarked that there remained “many unanswered questions, the most perplexing being why she left the vehicle.”
The family maintains fond memories of Mary Williams. They describe her as “incredibly fun, caring, and energetic.” It is hoped that the findings of the inquest can help to bring closure to those affected by the unexpected loss of their loved one
