Actor Jamie Lee Curtis has criticised Bella Ramsey for a joke made at the 2024 Critics Choice Awards about Ariana DeBose, calling it “unfunny”. In an Instagram post, Curtis shared a clip of Ramsey’s presentation, in which DeBose was categorised alongside Ryan Gosling and Jack Black as someone who believes they are also a singer – a quip that failed to amuse Curtis. She hashtagged “backthefuckoff” and “shutthefuckup” in reference to Ramsey, but some commenters pointed out that she was simply reading a joke written by someone else.
DeBose, a Tony Award nominee and Broadway veteran, was nominated at the ceremony for Best Song for “This Wish” from the Disney film Wish. After Ramsey’s joke, the camera cut to DeBose, who looked unimpressed. In a now-deleted Instagram post after the ceremony, Variety reported that DeBose wrote simply: “No I didn’t find it funny. Lol.”
This is not the first time Curtis has defended DeBose against criticism. In 2023, Curtis addressed DeBose’s opening rap performance at the BAFTAs, describing it as “joyous, celebratory, sisterly, hot, spicy and she’s just so incredibly talented.” Curtis has also expressed interest in playing Dr. Kureha in Netflix’s upcoming live-action adaptation of One Piece.
However, Curtis has also been criticised for a now-deleted post she made in support of Israel that depicted Palestinian children with the caption “terror from the skies”. Musician Tom Morello criticised the post, writing: “I’d like to make the radical proposal that the harming of children, no matter who they are & no matter who does it, is always wrong and should be condemned.
