A Greener Future (AGF) has released its list of festivals and events that have been granted a Certification for Sustainability. Included among the recipients are Primavera Sound, Boomtown, and Sziget. The events covered a broad range, from small local festivals to huge international events. The AGF certification has four grades of certification, running from “Outstanding” to “Improvers”.

Sziget Festival, which was awarded an “improvers” certification, expressed its appreciation for the certification. The festival believes that by taking part in the certification process and collaboration with like-minded individuals, they can further gain knowledge about sustainability and build partnerships.

The certification is part of the growing focus on sustainable practices, particularly in the music industry. The government has started banning single-use plastics, including plastic straws, and festivals are under increasing pressure to become more sustainable. In 2019, Eco-Disco made history by throwing the world’s first club night that eliminated all single-use plastics. Since then, London has hosted several “sustainable parties”.

AGF’s certification program requires festivals and events to assess waste, travel, energy, EDI, and governance to qualify. AGF’s objective is to offer a broader understanding of the carbon footprint generated by festivals and events, including animal and high-impact food and beverages. The Certification for Sustainability in the live events sector, specifically for festivals, is the world’s first sustainability standard.

The Green Events & Innovations conference will hold ceremonies on February 27, which marks the list of events that have achieved AGF’s Certification for Sustainability. The certification’s focus is on identifying sustainable events and building partnerships to encourage further collaboration among like-minded people in the industry
