Stephen Flynn, the SNP’s Westminster leader, has voiced concerns about possible consequences following the recent air strikes conducted by the US and UK forces in Yemen. He warned that such actions could lead to a much wider crisis in the region. Flynn also criticised the UK authorities’ decision to pardon the bombing campaign without consulting MPs as being “farcical”.

Many political leaders have been expressing their support for the strikes and the need to take action against the Houthi rebels, who have been targeting commercial ships in the Red Sea. The Iranian-backed group has been claiming to target Israel-linked vessels and have been accused of escalating tensions and causing a cost of living crisis due to their actions.

Flynn emphasised the importance of defending freedom of navigation and avoiding failures that could cause an escalation of conflict in the Middle East. He stressed the need for the UK government to clarify its medium and long-term goals.

The SNP leader questioned the government’s motive and emphasised the importance of ensuring that it does not “precipitate a much wider crisis in the region, nor indeed drag the UK or our allies into prolonged conflict in the Middle East, given the impact that has had in the past.” He also repeated his call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza to address the ongoing conflict that has been ongoing for over 100 days
