Michelle Keegan, best known for her role as Tina McIntyre in the UK soap Coronation Street, has admitted to feeling like Fool Me Once might be her last acting job. Fool Me Once, which is a Netflix adaptation of the Harlan Coben novel of the same name, sees Keegan playing the role of Maya, a woman who discovers her murdered husband on a secret nanny cam. Speaking on Fearne Cotton’s Happy Place podcast, Keegan revealed how she experiences imposter syndrome, feeling like the job she has just finished will be her last.
Despite her anxiety, Keegan is a successful actress, having starred in a wide range of programmes since leaving Coronation Street in 2014. Fool Me Once is simply the latest adaptation of Harlan Coben’s work that has been created for the streaming service. Coben himself signed a five-year deal with Netflix in 2018, with 14 of his novels being developed into series or films for the platform.
As well as Keegan, Fool Me Once’s cast includes Richard Armitage, Adeel Akhtar, Joanna Lumley, Emmett J. Scanlan and Dino Fetscher. However, it is Keegan’s portrayal of Maya that has caused the most conversation online so far. Some reviewers have praised her performance, with one describing her portrayal of Maya as “mesmerising”.
Keegan has spoken before about her anxiety, describing how she sweats out her stress through breathing techniques and exercise. Despite the anxiety she feels at the end of each job, Keegan’s work looks set to continue. At the end of 2021, it was announced that Netflix had extended Coben’s deal for another four years, meaning that there could be many more adaptations of his books to come. Fool Me Once is available to stream on Netflix now
