Background actor James Hunter has filed a lawsuit against actress Mia Goth who he claims intentionally kicked him in the head while filming the upcoming horror film MaXXXine. Hunter claims he suffered a concussion as a result of the incident. According to the lawsuit, the incident took place during a scene in which Goth ran past Hunter, stepped over him, and continued to run during the fourth take. Hunter is said to have complained to the second assistant director, who allegedly relayed the information to Goth. The suit goes on to claim that Goth deliberately kicked Hunter in the head during the following take, and then “taunted, mocked, and belittled him” in the bathroom afterwards.
The lawsuit also includes a wrongful termination claim against production company A24, Goth, and director Ti West. Hunter was allegedly told that production did not want him back for the remaining two days of filming. The third instalment of West’s X trilogy, MaXXXine follows survivor Maxine Minx, played by Goth, a burlesque dancer and adult film actress who had dreams of becoming a Hollywood star. The film will be set in the 1980s and stars Elizabeth Debicki, Moses Sumney, Michelle Monaghan, Bobby Cannavale, Lily Collins, Giancarlo Esposito, Kevin Bacon, and singer-songwriter Halsey in a major role.
Neither A24, Goth, nor West have commented on the lawsuit. MaXXXine began filming in April 2021. Goth’s performance in the previous film in the trilogy, Pearl, received positive reviews, including from NME, which awarded the film five stars. The review noted “Mixing comedy and tragedy with an edge of something genuinely unsettling (as well as nailing an uncut six-minute monologue, and even more unforgettable final shot), Goth’s Oscar snub feels like horror’s biggest slap in the face yet.
