Kevin Hart refuses to host Oscars again: “Those days are done”

Kevin Hart has said he would never host the Oscars as they are not “comedy-friendly environments”. In an interview with Sky News, the comedian reiterated his aversion to the role, having stepped down as host in 2019 in the wake of objections over a series of homophobic tweets he had posted in 2010 and 2011. Hart suggested that a group of personalities would be better suited to the role, rather than an individual comic. Jimmy Kimmel will host this year’s Oscars, his fourth time in the role.

In the same interview, Hart spoke about his recent film, Lift, which is available to stream on Netflix. The film sees the comic playing a thief who undertakes a heist on a 777 passenger flight from London to Zurich. For the first time, Hart said, he is playing a serious role and noted that he is “not responsible for the jokes”.

Earlier this week, Hart appeared on The Graham Norton Show to promote the film, where he spoke about a 2018 plane accident he had experienced. Following the incident, Hart told fans he was “lucky to be alive” and that it had given him a “whole new perspective” on life. In 2019, he was also involved in a serious car accident.

Previously, Hart had been scheduled to host the 2019 Oscars but stepped down from the role due to a backlash over earlier offensive tweets. Hart ruled out a return to the role in future, and argued that awards ceremonies are no longer suitable for comics
