Yasiin Bey, formerly known as Mos Def, has criticized Drake’s music, calling it “shopping” music and not true hip-hop. He expressed his thoughts on a fashion podcast, The Cutting Room Floor. Bey described Drake’s music as pop, stating that much of it is compatible with shopping and likable. He also questioned the message and purpose of Drake’s music, asking, “What’s in it for your audience apart from banging the pom-poms?”
This criticism is not unique to Bey. NME criticized Drake’s recent album, For All The Dogs, for a lack of quality control and heavy use of filler. With 23 tracks and almost 85 minutes in length, the album can feel like a slog at times. Drake has defended the album, teasing that he will “definitely” tour Europe in 2024 and visit places like Italy, Tokyo, and Albania.
Drake is currently on his “It’s All A Blur” tour, where he brought co-collaborator 21 Savage to perform outside of the US for the first time. Despite criticisms of his music, Drake remains one of the most successful and popular artists in the world. It remains to be seen if his style will continue to evolve or if he will stay true to his pop-leaning sound
