2023 was an incredible year for in-store performances at Rough Trade NYC. From hardcore bands to acoustic sets, some of the greatest musicians played intimate shows on Sixth Avenue and created unforgettable moments for music lovers. Staff members shared their favorite in-store performances of the year, and here are the most memorable ones.
The first hardcore band to play in the shop, Scowl, kicked off a fantastic year of in-stores. Celebrating the release of their new EP on Flatspot Records, Scowl played a lively set that turned the sales floor into a mosh pit, making it the perfect start for what was to come in 2024.
Caroline Polachek’s in-store signing event for her sophomore album, “Desire, I Want to Turn Into You,” was a personal and unforgettable experience for fans. The artist had a one-on-one conversation with each attendee, signed copies with personal messages, and spritzed them with a spicy, earthy scent that complements the album.
The Nude Party brought a unique and intimate acoustic set to the shop, settling in with nearly the entire band and a pedal steel. Supporting their new album, “Rides On,” the North Carolina natives had one of the most memorable in-stores of 2023.
Incendiary’s in-store event was described as a tornado of energy and physicality that reaffirmed the unique role of the record store as a place of celebration and congregation. As a pit filled with friends and like-minded people took over the small space, the community felt solid, inviting more metal and hardcore in 2024.
Other notable in-stores included Baroness performing in the shop for the release of their new album, Godcaster with their unique art-rock influence, Glen E. Friedman’s book event featuring members of Minor Threat in conversation, Sunny War’s incredible acoustic punk-folk-blues performance, Courtney Barnett’s signing event for her soundtrack “End of a Day,” and The Teskey Brothers’ powerful and soulful performance.
