Thurston Moore, founding member of the experimental rock band Sonic Youth, has released his long-awaited memoir, Sonic Life. The book chronicles Moore’s infatuation with music, from growing up in 1960s Connecticut to the subversive world of New York City and co-founding Sonic Youth. Moore spoke passionately about his writing process and the challenges and joys of recalling such a fascinating and formative life.

Moore always wanted to write a proper book-length work. He has published a great deal of writing through editing and publishing a poetry journal, as well as writing music journalism, but maintained a desire to have further writing in book-length form. The device of a memoir seemed to fit very nicely, allowing him to discuss his history that led up to Sonic Youth’s formation.

Moore faced some criticism for steering away from personal negative energy, but he wanted the book to be a celebration instead of investing negative energy into it.
