Suicide rates in the UK remain worryingly high, with one person taking their own life every 90 minutes. It’s a fact that highlights just how important it is to openly debate mental health and promote life-saving initiatives. Musicians, artists and entertainers face a higher risk of suicide, so it’s important to offer support where possible.

That’s why Rough Trade have teamed up with the Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM), supporting their incredible efforts to challenge the stigma surrounding suicide. CALM provides invaluable services, provokes conversation and brings people together to encourage reaching out for help.

Musicians are no exception when it comes to the risk of suicide. We are all people, regardless of our profession, and anyone can feel the impact of mental health issues. For many people, CALM stands as a beacon of hope, bringing together those who are suffering on a global basis. CALM is open 365 days a year, and offers practical suggestions for a wide range of life challenges.

Through January, Rough Trade will be running a fundraiser to fundraise for CALM, with £1 for every non-alcoholic beer purchased in their bars in Rough Trade East, Rough Trade Bristol, and Rough Trade Nottingham being donated to the charity. Signature Brew’s Lo-Fi non-alcoholic beer, served on draught, is the mainstay of the fundraiser, and we can all help by raising money to donate in store or online to ensure CALM can continue their life-saving services.

Simon Gunning, CALM’s Chief Executive, said the partnership with Rough Trade is a major boost to the charity’s life-saving campaigns and services. “More people than ever are turning to CALM for support and advice”, he said, citing a rise from 3 million minutes of calls in 2022 to even more in 2023. He sees this partnership as essential for the charity to be able to save even more lives and continue their fight against suicide. Campaign Against Living Miserably is a registered charity in England and Wales (1110621) and in Scotland (SC044347).

Let’s all work together to support each other and maintain a safe society where mental health issues are discussed openly, support is on hand to deal with life’s challenges, and we can all reject living miserably
