Renowned Radio DJ and broadcaster, Annie Nightingale, has passed away at the age of 83, according to a statement released by her family. She died at her home in London after a brief illness. The family statement described her as a “pioneer, trailblazer, and an inspiration to many,” who never stopped sharing her enthusiasm for music with audiences during a broadcasting career spanning over six decades on BBC TV and radio worldwide. She was a role model for generations of young female DJs who admired her for breaking down gender barriers and refusing to bow down to sexual prejudice and male fear.
Born in London in 1940, Nightingale made history in 1970 by becoming the first female presenter on BBC Radio 1, a role she attained after persisting for three years. At the station, she remained the only female DJ for twelve years but helped open doors for other female DJs, such as Lauren Laverne, Jo Whiley, Zoe Ball, and Annie Mac. She later hosted an interview series for ITV, “One To One,” where she interviewed numerous influential figures such as Debbie Harry, Paul McCartney, Stevie Nicks, and Peter Gabriel.
Throughout her long and illustrious career, Nightingale interviewed many famous artists such as The Who, Sting, Duran Duran, Michael Palin, Rowan Atkinson, and Clive James. She championed a vast list of artists throughout her broadcasting career, including Blondie, Talking Heads, The Rolling Stones, The Clash, and many more. She was a pioneer of the acid house revolution in the 1990s and championed Electronic Dance Music globally, cementing her status among the world’s most prominent broadcasting DJs.
The Radio 1 presenter remained in the entertainment industry until her passing, with her show Annie Nightingale Presents airing on the station until late last year. She was hailed as a broadcasting legend after her demise, leading to tributes flooding in on social media from fans, artists, and industry leaders alike. A memorial service for Nightingale is set to take place in the spring, according to her family statement
