Former Royal Marine and Invictus Games athlete Mark Ormrod recently had a set of prosthetic legs stolen from his car, which was parked at a Premier Inn in Chiswick, West London. Among other items in the car, the theft of the legs posed a huge inconvenience to Ormrod who lost both legs and his right arm in Afghanistan in 2007. The police were informed of the crime, but security cameras installed outside the hotel failed to capture the thief who blocked the line of sight.
After posting about the incident on social media, a woman reached out to Ormrod, informing him that she had found his prosthetic legs in an alleyway. The woman saw his social media post online and reached out to him personally so he could retrieve them. On his way out of London after the incident occurred, he checked his emails and direct messages and to his delight, he learned that the woman had found his equipment.
The theft left Ormrod frustrated and annoyed that someone would steal equipment that enables him to live independently, and questioned why anyone would think it is acceptable to break into a car parked in a disabled parking space. His work with The Royal Marines Charity, Invictus Games achievements, and MBE award, earned for his services to the Royal Marines and veterans represents his never-give-up attitude. Ormrod also shared a photo of the shattered back window of his car in his social media post on X.
Ormrod’s story has garnered widespread attention on social media due to his inspiring story and resiliency after being injured in Afghanistan. He has become an advocate for veterans’ rights and has used his platform to help others going through similar situations. The public is urged to assist the police in finding the thief responsible for the theft, and to ensure such crimes are curbed in the future
