The coroner’s report has revealed that Irish musician Sinéad O’Connor died of natural causes at the age of 56. The Southwark Coroner’s Court confirmed this in a statement released on January 9th. News of O’Connor’s death was confirmed in July last year by Raidió Teilifís Éireann, citing a statement from her family that requested privacy at the time. The New York Times also reported that she was found dead in her South East London home with no suspicious circumstances.

Sinéad O’Connor was a singer-songwriter best known for her 1990 single “Nothing Compares 2 U,” written by Prince. The song became a worldwide hit, topping charts in 13 countries across four continents. She released 10 studio albums in her career, starting with “The Lion and the Cobra” in 1987 and finishing with “I’m Not Bossy, I’m the Boss” in 2014. O’Connor continued to perform and record under her birth name despite legally changing it to Shuhada’ Sadaqat in 2021 after converting to Islam in 2018.

Following the news of O’Connor’s death, many music figures and fans shared their tributes to the artist, including DJ and producer David Holmes who had been working with O’Connor on a new album before her death. The Guardian reported that O’Connor had filmed a video earlier in the month of her death at her Herne Hill flat, where she expressed her hopes of recording new songs.

A concert is set to take place on March 20th in New York City, paying tribute to both Sinéad O’Connor and Pogues’ vocalist Shane MacGowan, who passed away recently. The concert will feature performances from artists such as Cat Power and David Gray. More information about the “Sinéad & Shane” concert can be found on the City Winery website
