Iasos, a pioneer of New Age music, has passed away at the age of 77. The Greek-American musician died in Maui, Hawaii, on January 6, according to Carlos Niño, a close friend and producer. Iasos was an accomplished musician who began studying music when he was eight years old, continuing his education via self-study and exploring composers from around the world.
In the late 1960s, Iasos created a sound he called “paradise music” and moved to California, believing this new genre could help people connect to spiritual realms. He released his first album, “Inter-Dimensional Music,” in 1975, featuring experimental sounds that contributed to the creation of the New Age genre. New Age music is revered not only for its unique sound but for its spiritual roots, with practitioners believing in its healing potential.
Iasos’ music became popular with yoga, meditation, and alternative healing practices worldwide. His work even came under the scrutiny of scientists at NASA, as VICE reported in 2014. Plymouth State University, studying near-death experiences in 1989, also found that Iasos’ work resonated most with participants, notably the track “Angels of Comfort.”
Despite releasing Inter-Dimensional Music in 1975, Iasos remained dedicated to his craft. He taught workshops and seminars on the different ways sound and music can heal, align, and drive consciousness evolution. Iasos performed up until 2023, hosting multimedia concerts at various venues worldwide. All proceeds from Iasos’ music sales, available on his Bandcamp account, will now go towards supporting his legacy, according to Yoga Records
