Positive News magazine’s latest issue features interviews with a range of individuals who, despite their vulnerability towards despair, have found purpose and positivity. Environmental campaigner Chris Packham admits that hearing about affronts to nature can shake his sense of hope, while campaigner for flexible working Anna Whitehouse worries about the world her children will inherit. However, these people, along with others interviewed for the magazine, have found ways to move forward. Silo’s founder, Douglas McMaster, shrugs off criticism that his zero-waste restaurant is “preachy”, and is passionate about composting and fermentation processes.
The Graphic Rewilding project fills grey urban spaces with murals of flowers, Jodie Jackson runs the News Literacy Lab, which helps young people cope with today’s media, Sammy Woodhouse helps other survivors of sexual assault to feel hope, and the issue also features business trailblazers, planet-minded athletes, kind-hearted crafters, climate choristers, and a proselytising librarian. The issue briefly features “insta-poets” and includes a poem by Nikita Gill that reflects on the troubles of the world but also acknowledges the beautiful things people are doing to make life worth living.
Throughout the issue, while the interviewees share their fears and doubts for the future, they also highlight the power of purpose, passion, and positivity. By finding importance in their work and passions, and sharing their optimism with others, they are not only improving their own lives but also the collective feeling towards the future. The hope and progress that these people create showcases the power of individuals in creating a better world.
