Madison Square Garden Entertainment has officially withdrawn plans to build a MSG Sphere in East London, after investing millions into its development. The move comes after London mayor Sadiq Khan rejected the plans late last year, citing concerns over the negative impact it could have on local residents. The withdrawal also follows news of huge losses at MSG’s flagship Las Vegas venue, with a reported loss of $98.4 million since its opening in 2023. In a letter submitted to the Planning Inspectorate, MSG Entertainment confirmed its official withdrawal, adding that “millions” had been spent on the project’s development.
Despite an order from levelling-up secretary Michael Gove for a six-week pause, and a call to reconsider the mayor’s decision to derail the Sphere’s development, Madison Square Garden Entertainment has confirmed it will no longer pursue the project. Sphere Entertainment Co. released a statement saying: “We are committed to continuing to work collaboratively with forward-thinking cities around the world who are serious about bringing this next-generation entertainment experience to their communities.” The withdrawal letter called the planning process “a political football between rival parties”, indicating the company could no longer participate.
Concerns over the MSG Sphere’s development have been raised by local residents and counselors over potential hazardous health risks. Additionally, the exterior of the venue featured an estimated one million LED light bulbs and bright advertisements, which could cause disruptions and well as put a strain on local infrastructure.
