The Sustainable Food Places award has been presented to Liverpool’s Good Food Plan partnership, led by Feeding Liverpool and Liverpool City Council. The initiative, launched in October 2021, aims to provide Good Food for All through the promotion of healthy, sustainable and local food. The bronze award recognises the plan’s accomplishments in dealing with food poverty, tackling diet-related ill-health, the climate emergency and the loss of independent food retailers. Liverpool’s work in improving access to affordable healthy food and building a good food movement involving people with lived experience of poverty was also lauded.
Liverpool City Council Leader Cllr Liam Robinson welcomed the recognition, stating that though many challenges remain ahead, the partnership will continue to focus its efforts on providing healthy, nutritious and sustainable food to all Liverpool residents. Professor Matthew Ashton, Liverpool’s Director of Public Health, highlighted the collaborative efforts of Feeding Liverpool, Liverpool City Council and its partners in the promotion of healthy local food. Good Food Programme Director Dr Naomi Maynard, expressed her delight in the recognition of the hard work put in by hundreds of organisations and communities to ensure Good Food for All in Liverpool.
Leon Ballin, Sustainable Food Places Programme Manager, acknowledged Liverpool’s creative and committed people for making healthy and sustainable food a defining characteristic of the city. He observed that Liverpool’s sustainable food initiatives provide a benchmark for other members of the UK Sustainable Food Places Network to follow. The award showcases Liverpool’s progress towards achieving the goals of the Good Food Plan and the transformative work yet to be done in the future
