Bleeding control cabinets installed in city centre

In Liverpool, six emergency ‘bleeding control cabinets’ have been installed in key locations throughout the city centre to help save lives. The cabinets, which are bright red and accessible 24 hours a day, contain portable bleed kits. Each kit offers a vital tool to prevent and reduce major blood loss prior to the arrival of paramedics. To access the cabinets, people need to call 999 to receive an access code, with simple instructions on how to use the kits.

The six cabinets are just the start of the roll-out of the life-saving equipment. Two cabinets have already been installed near Formby Beach, and an additional 20 are expected to be put up in locations across the region. Locations will be identified through crime data and with input from outreach workers. More than 1,500 of the individual accessible bleed kits have already been distributed to organisations and venues across the region, including clubs, bars and pubs, schools, and taxis.

The roll-out of the life-saving equipment is being spearheaded by KnifeSavers, a charitable social enterprise that originates from the Liverpool University Hospitals Foundation Trust and part of a wider campaign focused on educating young people about the consequences of carrying a knife, as well as educating and empowering the general public on how to act quickly to control major bleeding from any injury. The initiative was launched in memory of 12-year-old Ava White, who was fatally stabbed in November 2021. The mother of Ava White has supported the campaign since its launch.

Liverpool City Council, the Merseyside Violence Reduction Partnership, Merseyside Police, and the region’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Emily Spurrell, are among the supporters of the campaign. Liverpool City Council’s Cabinet Member with responsibility for Community Safety, Councillor Laura Robertson-Collins, said that although rare, incidents involving severe bleeding can be fatal, so these cabinets could prove invaluable after initial incidents to play a crucial role in saving someone’s life.
