The Spice Girls are set to be the subject of a new set of commemorative stamps from the UK’s Royal Mail to celebrate the band’s 30th anniversary. The stamps will be the first time that an entire stamp issue has been dedicated to a female pop group by Royal Mail. Some of the pictures include Victoria Beckham performing during The Return of the Spice Girls Tour and Geri Halliwell-Horner in her iconic Union Jack dress at the 1997 Brit Awards. Plus, other images from their performances from 1997 to 2012, which includes at the Brit Awards in 1997, and at the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games.
The stamps go on general sale on 11 January. The Spice Girls have been a force to be reckoned with since they formed as a group in 1994. It seems their Wannabe has always been successful. “Spice mania” swept the planet, scoring their nine UK number one hits since Say You’ll Be There until Viva Forever. The Spice Girls said they were honored to be celebrated alongside some of the most iconic and influential music legends by the Royal Mail.
According to David Gold, the Royal Mail director of external affairs and policy, the Spice Girls have been influential for so many aspects of life. “We are proud to celebrate the most successful female music group ever seen, not only for their music but their enduring influence,” he said. The Spice Girls said they could never have imagined this happening when they first formed, and consider this Girl Power!
These stamps are a miniature sheet inspired by the Spice Girls’ Spice World photoshoot. It is the sixth time that a music group has been featured in a dedicated Royal Mail stamp issue, following The Beatles in 2007, Pink Floyd in 2016, Queen in 2020, The Rolling Stones in 2022, and Iron Maiden in 2023.
