In a shock turn of events, the PDC World Darts Championship has seen 16-year-old Luke Littler storm into the final after a stunning defeat of Rob Cross. Though he lost the first set, Littler quickly recovered and went on to win 6-2. This is Littler’s first time in the tournament, and he has now amassed £200,000. He’s also now the youngest person to reach the final, previous holder Kirk Shepherd only making it when he was 21 years and 88 days old in 2008.
“It is crazy to even think I am in the final on my debut,” said Littler, adding: “I was happy to win one game and now I can go all the way. It’s not easy. You are playing Rob, he is a world champion who won on debut. I’ve got no words.” When asked about his preparation for the upcoming final, Littler stated, “I’ll be doing what I’ve been doing. In the morning I’ll go for my ham and cheese omelette and then come here, have a pizza and then prep on the board. That is what I’ve done every day.”
Should Littler win, he will go down in history as the youngest winner of the tournament, having overtaken van Gerwen, who was 24 years and nine months old when he won his first title in 2014. Remarkably, his final opponent will be either Luke Humphries or Scott Williams, both of whom are aiming to make their first final. Humphries will become the world number one if he reaches the final.
Littler’s stock rose significantly during the previous rounds of the tournament, having only started ranked 164th in the world. Before his semi-final match, he had a provisional ranking of 50, and could rise as high as ninth if he takes the title on Wednesday. The 16-year-old had only played in four senior matches at PDC premier events before his debut on 20 December
