Police have arrested a 68-year-old man on suspicion of murdering two women in Staffordshire. The women, aged 91 and 63, were found at a property in Cheadle, close to Stoke-on-Trent. Staffordshire Police received a call on New Year’s Eve at approximately 15:00 GMT, reporting that a woman’s body had been found and another woman was injured. Both women were pronounced dead at the scene at about 15:50 GMT.

People living in the lane leading to the Staffordshire countryside said that an elderly woman lived at the house with her daughter and son-in-law. Neighbours described hearing an air ambulance on Sunday afternoon before other emergency vehicles arrived. A section of the lane remains sealed off between the house and the town centre. Forensic investigators were seen entering the dormer bungalow earlier, and a police tent was photographed in the garden.

The man remains in custody for questioning, and Staffordshire Police have stated officers are “keeping an open mind” regarding the circumstances leading up to the women’s deaths. Post-mortem examinations are set to take place tomorrow. The force is appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

Rob Bourne, a neighbour of the property, said that it was a very sad time for everyone concerned, the families and people who’ve lost their lives. Another neighbour said that they saw the helicopter from their home and went to investigate. They said they had no idea what had happened and that you just don’t expect it up here, it’s so dreadful.
