On Friday night, a house fire broke out in south Croydon, resulting in the death of two men and leaving two more in life-threatening condition. The fire began just before 23:00 GMT, at a home on Sanderstead Road. An investigation into the cause of the incident is now commencing by both the London Fire Brigade (LFB) and police officials. Police have revealed that “two men, no further details, were sadly pronounced dead at the scene,” and their families are being located.
In a statement, an LFB spokesperson said that “most of the ground floor of a two-storey end-of-terrace house was damaged by fire,” and a total of six fire engines and around 40 firefighters were in attendance, hailing from Norbury, Purley, Croydon, Wallington, and Woodside stations. Emergency services were called soon before 23:00. The fire was considered under control by 00:16, according to the LFB statement.
Due to the severity of the fire, one other individual was treated at the hospital and later released. BBC Radio London has provided coverage of the event and continues to follow the story. Those with story ideas are encouraged to reach out to the BBC on social media.
The matter is still ongoing, and there is expected to be a thorough investigation into what caused the fire, what led to the deaths of the two men, and how others may have been impacted by the incident. It is hoped that further details will be released in due course, although the investigation may take some time
