Camberwell protesters arrested after clash with police

Clashes between police and protesters took place in south London after a demonstration related to “tensions in the Eritrean community,” according to a statement from the Metropolitan Police. The incident happened in Camberwell and footage appeared to show people wielding sticks and engaging in conflict with police officers, leading to traffic being brought to a standstill. The location is close to The Lighthouse Theatre where approximately 50 people gathered outside a private venue before violence broke out.

The police report that a strong police presence remains at the scene and additional officers have been called in to provide back-up. A dispersal order is in place in the area until 07:00 on Sunday, which gives police the power to exclude an individual from the area. The police have also confirmed that several arrests have been made but have not given figures as yet.
