Sheffield murder inquiry: Crash victim devoted his life to others, say family

Chris Marriott, a 46-year-old “Good Samaritan,” was helping an unconscious woman in Sheffield on Wednesday when he was hit by a car and killed. Two men have been arrested in connection with the incident, one of whom has been released on bail. Mr. Marriott’s family urged anyone with information about his death to contact police, noting that his death highlighted the kind of man he was – someone who was always willing to help others.

Mr Marriott’s family said in a statement that he was a “man of faith” who wanted others to experience the “joy he had found trusting in Jesus.” The statement emphasized that Marriott had “devoted his life to helping others,” a sentiment echoed by his colleagues at the charity Community Money Advice (CMA), where he worked as an IT manager. CMA’s chief executive, Heather Keates, said the whole team was “heartbroken,” noting that the fact that Marriott was helping someone when he died was “Chris all over”.

In the aftermath of the incident, a number of people were injured in addition to Mr. Marriott, including an off-duty midwife who had also stopped to help. The woman Mr. Marriott had been aiding remained in hospital in a life-threatening condition. Dr. Alan Billings, South Yorkshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner, called Mr. Marriott’s death a “heartbreaking tragedy,” saying that “violent behavior” only makes things worse. Investigations are ongoing, and increased patrols will be deployed in the area, according to South Yorkshire Police.

Mr. Marriott’s death has been met with widespread sadness, with the Sheffield City Church calling it a “tragic” incident and saying that the “thoughts and prayers” of church members are with his family. The church spokesman added that Marriott “died doing what so many will remember him for – helping others.
