On Thursday, three individuals died after their 4×4 vehicle was submerged in River Esk near Glaisdale in the North York Moors. A neighbour attempted to save them but the vehicle was quickly swept away by the river currents as they were attempting to cross a ford. Chris Ford, who lives nearby, had received a call that a vehicle was stuck in the river. Upon arriving, he saw the vehicle was fully submerged in the water with the three men still inside. He reported that the river had carried them roughly 400 yards downstream, and sadly, they did not survive.
Mr. Ford believed that the men were part of an off-roading group and that they crossed the river at Rake Lane. He and two others used tractors to pull the 4×4 onto the riverbank. Additionally, another man who attempted to help those trapped in the car was pulled from the river and needed medical treatment. Local residents relayed seeing several 4×4 vehicles passing their home down towards the ford just before the incident.
The area is known to be popular with 4×4 drivers, and it is common to see roughly 10 of them driving in the area during the summer. Police, when questioned about the freak accident, said that driving conditions are exceptionally hazardous around the River Esk area, and the situation was particularly bad in recent times compared to the rest of the county
