A fire that broke out on Tuesday at AJ’s Diner in County Down, Northern Ireland has been successfully extinguished by over 50 firefighters. The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) received notice of the blaze around 2 pm GMT on Tuesday, and immediately dispatched nine pumps and an aerial appliance to the scene.

A spokesperson for the NIFRS informed BBC News NI that “We have managed to contain the fire at a kitchen/storeroom in AJ’s Diner. That fire is extinguished. We are staying at the scene as part of our ongoing operations.” The cause of the fire is currently unknown.

Some people who were evacuated from their nearby apartments were permitted to return home later that evening. Earlier in the evening, DUP cllr Jonathan Jackson had revealed that firefighters had successfully removed gas cylinders from behind the restaurant.

The incident has sparked an investigation into the cause of the fire by the NIFRS. In the meantime, AJ’s Diner remains closed until further notice
