The holiday season is often synonymous with joy and festivities. However, for some individuals, this time of year can bring about feelings of loneliness and seclusion. Jayne McCubbin from BBC Breakfast had the opportunity to meet with Barbara, a volunteer from Age UK who candidly shared her personal journey.
After the loss of her husband, Mike, 18 years ago, Barbara stopped celebrating Christmas altogether. It wasn’t until she became an Age UK volunteer that her life changed for the better. Through volunteering, Barbara found purpose and a sense of community that helped alleviate her feelings of isolation.
During her interview with McCubbin, Barbara received an unexpected surprise. Sir Cliff Richard, a well-known British musician, sent her a heartfelt video message. The message expressed gratitude for Barbara’s volunteer work and acknowledged the impact she’s had on others in her community.
