The two teenagers found guilty of the murder of Brianna Ghey, a 16-year-old transgender girl who was stabbed 28 times in a park in Cheshire last February, will have their anonymity lifted next year. The teenagers, who are now aged 16, will be named at the sentencing hearing on 2 February at Manchester Crown Court. The trial judge, Mrs Justice Yip, ruled that the order could be lifted, citing the public interest in the reporting of such an exceptional case.
Lawyers for the teenagers had opposed the media’s application to lift their anonymity, arguing that the reporting could have ramifications on their welfare. They also raised concerns over the consequences for their families, including death threats received by the family of girl Y.
