Recess announces Drumsheds party alongside “large event” plans for 2024

Recess has announced that it will be returning to its home in Tottenham for a special event at the Drumsheds in early 2024. This will be their biggest party to date, following the success of Recessland day festival in Margate, attracting 7,000 people, and a day event in Paris, which was attended by a further 4,000 party-goers. The show is primed for March 2 and will be the 101st party since the club night’s inception.

Recess was formed with the mission to create an outstanding party with all the popular black music genres, accessible to everyone across London. It provides a platform for a diverse range of genres, such as Afrobeats, amapiano, and dancehall, and includes house, UK funky, old school grime, and hip hop, among others. The founders behind the independent radio station No Signal have built up the club night, which now aims to be in the same space as festivals such as Wireless.

Initially, venues resisted hosting parties featuring Black music; however, those old preconceptions have now been dispelled. In an interview, co-founder Jojo Sonubi said, “It’s time for [Recess] to move from [the club] space into a bigger space… There are loads of options for other genres. For the kind of genres we operate in, there’s not that many festivals that have the same pulling power, or spending power that Wireless has.”

Recess is moving into the large-scale event scene, which means that its parties’ regularity will drop, with only eight parties confirmed for 2024 compared to the 25 events arranged in 2023. However, No Signal will be ramping up its parties to fill in the gaps left by the previous Recess schedule. Tickets are available on Recess’s website
