Michelle Mone has finally come clean about her connection to the personal protective equipment (PPE) sold to the UK government by her husband’s company, PPE Medpro. In an exclusive interview, the former Conservative peer admitted that she and her husband stand to benefit from tens of millions of pounds of profit made by their financial trusts, which hold around £60m from the deal.
Mone and her husband previously denied any involvement in the PPE deal with the government, but now say they have been made “scapegoats” for the government’s shortcomings with PPE. The gowns supplied by PPE Medpro were never used by the NHS, and the company is facing a civil claim from the Department of Health.
Despite this, Mone and her husband maintain that they provided the gowns in accordance with the contract. Their interview with Laura Kuenssberg on BBC One is the couple’s first TV appearance since their involvement with the PPE contract came to light.
It remains to be seen what implications this admission will have for Mone and her husband, as well as for the wider public perception of the government’s handling of the pandemic and procurement of PPE. However, the admission marks a significant reversal from their previous denials of involvement in the PPE deal.
