The prime minister is likely feeling relieved after his government’s recent win in a crucial vote. While it’s not exactly a major feat to win this early stage of passing a new law, the alternative would have been much worse. If he had lost, there would have been serious questions raised about Rishi Sunak’s future and authority, and the Rwanda plan would have been doomed.

Fortunately for the government, they were able to secure a victory this time around. But that doesn’t mean the danger wasn’t real: a climate minister doesn’t get flown back to vote unless there’s a genuine concern about losing. It was a big risk for Sunak, who had to work hard to persuade his colleagues to vote in favor.

While Sunak’s position in opinion polls isn’t looking great, his position within the Conservative Party is faring better than it could have been. But the fact that there are multiple factions within the party doesn’t bode well for the future. The MP for Mansfield and leader of Nottinghamshire County Council admits that the party has become a tangled web of interests that won’t be easy to navigate.

But where does that leave the Rwanda policy? Those who offered their support will want it to remain as-is, while those who abstained will likely demand changes. Finding a middle ground won’t be easy, and the situation may become even more complicated when the bill returns in the new year
